Creativity: The Divine Act of Creating

Genesis 1:1Genesis 1:1 “In the beginning, God created …”

It’s a familiar passage that most people have heard from their youth. Sometimes I wonder if it’s too familiar. I open my Bible and skim right over it because I’ve seen it so many dozens of times.

But have you ever stopped to consider the depth of meaning in the first five words of the Bible? I hadn’t until one day this passage suddenly jumped out at me.

God’s Word is His letter to us, meant to teach us, instruct us, and guide us. But most of all the Bible is meant to reveal Himself through its passages. And the first aspect of His nature and His personality that God chooses to reveal is this:

“In the beginning, God created …”

Before He tells us about anything that He has done, about what was, what is, or what will be, God chooses to reveal this very important detail about Himself. He is a creative God. I find it fascinating that when He could choose to begin with anything, lead with any information about Himself or His plan, He chose to tell us this: “I am creative.

Read a little further and in Genesis 1:26 God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness …” and the picture becomes even more clear and exciting. God made us like Him, and that means that the creativity of God flows through every one of us, an integral part of man’s being. Creativity is one aspect of man’s nature that sets man apart from all other living creatures.

I love to create, whether I’m writing, sewing, crocheting, designing, or doing any one of the dozens of creative activities I enjoy. When I am fully immersed in the act of creating, I experience a sense of exhilaration that is unmatched by any other activity in my life. When we create, we tap into the nature of God flowing within us, and when we use that creativity to glorify and worship Him, we can experience a unity with Him that is impossible to replicate any other way.

Maybe you’ve experienced it too. I believe that’s why people develop such a passion for their creative hobbies and why many people are driven to start businesses that allow them to use their creative talents full-time. We all have an intrinsic desire to connect with the Divine on a creative level.

Creativity is an integral fiber in the tapestry of your life. Embrace your creativity, and you embrace the nature of God flowing within you. Encourage creativity in your children. Appreciate the creative efforts of your family and friends. They are displaying the Divine nature of God in their lives, and that is something special.

So tell me, what creative activities do you enjoy, and do you feel a sense of the Divine when you are fully engaged in those activities?
